Students at Adaire School are working on an abstract Polygon Mural inspired by the artist Frank Stella. Students "deconstructed" and then " reconstructed" paintings from this series. Next week students will record how many irregular polygons are in each collage and how many regular polygons are in each collage.

Mixing Science and Art
Students at Hackett Elementary School made paper today out of recycled newspaper that they prepared last week. After the paper was mixed with water and blended the students spread the pulp over a screen to drain water. The students then sprinkled seeds on top so that it can be planted and grow beautiful wildflowers.  This lesson is part of a unit we are working on integrating science concepts  of natural vs manmade materials and art concepts of traditional paper making and radial symmetry.

Students at Hackett have began their polygon and art unit a few weeks ago. This week they got a chance to simply explore what polygons can make. This process required students to use divergent thinking skills and see what can be done with these shapes.  In the next few weeks these students will begin working on a polygon city mural.

Students at Hackett began a long term art and math unit a few weeks ago. They will be creating murals for their school of polygon cities. This week students  made a list of the places and resources of Philadelphia. They used maps of downtown and maps of Pennsylvania to help them. Students were required to list places in the categories of residential, commercial, industrial, green spaces, and community resources. They will use this information to inspire them when they design their own cities.
