Shape Cities
SHAPE CITIES
For this unit K-2 students focused on identifying shapes and recognizing what shapes
everyday objects are made up of. Students reviewed basic shapes and then studied Paul Klee’s
Castle and the Sun. Students then experimented with shapes stamps and use them to create their
own city scape. Afterwards students filled out a "city card" explaining the name of their city, what shapes they used the most, and why you should visit.

Fraction Quilts
FRACTION QUILTS
In this unit 3rd and 5th grade students reviewed the fundamental concepts of fractions and used fraction-shapes to design a paper quilt pattern. The children physically fold and cut the paper shapes into fractions. This allowed the children to explore fractions through a hands-on, tactile approach. The children then arrange their brightly colored patterned shapes that they cut into fractions into pleasing composition for their quilt square and recorded what fraction of each shape they used.
